Aunty Hsiao Mei is my father’s good friend.
Together with a group of friends, they all played active roles in Care Corner’s
first days. That was 31 years ago and so I first knew her as a child and then
as an adult thereafter when I became her co-worker at Care Corner.
I have distinct memories of her as a child.
I remember that I was never invisible in her conversations amongst other
adults. Her patience and attentiveness made me feel like I could tell her
anything.
As an adult and a therapist at Care Corner
Counselling Centre, I watched her at the sides as a junior would observe a
master therapist. It was obvious to me that she loved her work. She had a big
heart for people, not just for her clients alone but every individual whom she
met. No matter how busy she was, she would give her full attention to anyone
who approached her. There were definitely many who sought her advice, because
she was a woman who gave wise and honest opinions.
I admired her most for her commitment to
God. Despite her busyness, she would
attend all prayer meetings. Her busyness also stems from her desire to love
people like the way God loves his creation.
Last but not least, I am most grateful to
her for offering to compile a book about my late father. Even when they haven’t
had the chance to catch up with one another for many years, she offered to
undertake this huge task when she heard of my father’s sudden death. She was a
friend indeed and a very loyal one. However, before we could start with my
father’s book, her cancer struck. It is with much grief that I am the one
writing for her book instead.
Dear Aunty Hsiao Mei, you are dearly
missed. Thank you for just being you and for being there for me and my family.
It has brought much goodness into my life and will continue to do so. Thank you.
Love,
Xiao Ming
